Music In Mid Ohio
Each Sunday afternoon at 1pm, you can enjoy performances from some of the outstanding artists and ensembles in Columbus and surrounding areas. This month鈥檚 performers include pianist Orlay Alonso, the Schola or St. Joseph Cathedral, Indianola Presbyterian Church Choir and Orchestra, MACCO and the Early Interval just for starters.
The American Sound
Relish the warm days of summer this month on The American Sound. Join host Jennifer Hambrick for The American Sound, Saturday evenings at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm on Classical 101.
Highlights for The American Sound in July include:
- July 3/6 鈥 Meet the softer side of the bad boy of classical music. George Antheil鈥檚 Valentine Waltzes are a trip through the joy and heartache of love, one sweeping waltz at a time.
- July 10/13 鈥 In a lush, blues-inflected musical language, this symphony portrays what the composer called the 鈥渟ons of the soil.鈥 Hear William Grant Still鈥檚 鈥淎fro-American鈥 Symphony.
- July 17/20 鈥 From its achingly lyrical beginning to its quicksilver finale, Samuel Barber鈥檚 Violin Concerto is a melting pot of passionate expression and fiery virtuosity.
- July 24/27 鈥 It鈥檚 a fresh take on one of America鈥檚 best-loved traditional songs. James Cohn鈥檚 Variations on The Wayfaring Stranger are a musical tribute to two people who helped the composer through part of his life鈥檚 journey.
- July 31/August 3 鈥 The spirit of the Appalachians in the sounds of a symphony, 鈥淭o the Appalachian Mountains鈥 by Alan Hovhaness.
Symphony Showcase
This month, Symphony Showcase features four of the greatest symphonies from the most popular Russian composer of all time. Join Kent Teeters Sundays at 6pm and Thursdays at 7 pm.
Highlights for Symphony Showcase in July include:
- July 4/8 鈥 罢肠丑补颈办辞惫蝉办测鈥檚 powerful Symphony No. 4 and the popular 1812 Overture, both performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra with conductor Riccardo Muti
- July 11/15 鈥 The always electric Gustavo Dudamel leads the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony in 罢肠丑补颈办辞惫蝉办测鈥檚 Symphony No. 5 and Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra offer the lush Andante Cantabile
- July 18/22 鈥罢肠丑补颈办辞惫蝉办测鈥檚 Marche slave with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Symphony No. 6 鈥淧补迟丑别迟颈辩耻别鈥 with Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic
- July 25/29 鈥罢肠丑补颈办辞惫蝉办测鈥檚 Symphony No. 2 鈥淟ittle Russian鈥 with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Riccardo Muti. And Tchaikovsky pays tribute to a favorite composer鈥攈is Orchestra Suite No. 4 鈥淢辞锄补谤迟颈补苍补.鈥
